I was eight years old when World War 2 started in September 1939 so I was at school during the entire war. I lived in a village in Surrey which was a 'reception'area for childreen evacuated from London. We had to 'share' our school with many extra children so during the day we had to walk to other halls or rooms in the village for some of our lessons - not very pleasant on wet or cold days. The village was in a direct line between London and the coast and we did have some Air Raids but usually at night. If the siren sounded in the day we had to go into the corridors which were considered the safest place and we would sit and sing all the popular songs. However in February 1943 a number of bombs were dropped on the village in the early morning and one did drop on the corridor of the school killing two pupils and three adults who had arrived early at the school. I was actually passing the school with my sister as we were on our way to the railway station as we were then attending a Grammar School in a town a few miles away. This school also 'shared its buildings with another school from London and we only had lessons in the morning (including Saturdays) but had to have a lot of homework. I was at that school when the V 1's (or Doodlebugs ) where launched on Britain in June l944. These came over the school frequently and when the engine stopped they would land and explode so most of our lessons were held in the shelters. In July 1944 my own school was evacuated but I went with my Mother to stay with my Father who had been sent to Sussex as a War Reserve Policeman. I later transferred to a Girls High School in that area where I remained until I left school after the war.
