I served during WW2 as a gunner on a merchant ship, members of the engine room crew decided to jump ship, The Chief Engineer told me to stop them using the gangway, if they persisted (which they did) he told me to shoot them, I explained, I had no ammo. After the ship sailed minus the engine room crew, I was ordered down below to feed the boilers or and to trim the coal. We sailed t0 equitorial africa, I lost a stone, suffered heat stroke, recurring Malaria, lost my body hair, and inherited a skin rash which I still have. Should I have obeyed the Chief?
