During the period of the Phoney War my sister Doris and I decided to go to the cinema one evening. To our amazement, during the performance the air raid warning went. The cinema was cleared but unfortunately I got separated from my sister, who was younger than me (16), and we ended up in separate shelters.
It turned out to be an observation raid, but we weren鈥檛 let out of the shelter for some hours, until about 2 or 3 am. The cinema was within walking distance of our home, so I started to walk home. When I got home, the first thing my parents said was 鈥淲here鈥檚 Doris?鈥 I鈥檇 never seen my father lose his temper before, but this time he did.
My Dad set off to try to find Doris, leaving me in tears. About 10 minutes later, he met up with my sister along the same road and she鈥檇 got a soldier in tow 鈥 he was bringing her home. He came back to the house and had a coffee. My Dad offered him a drink and made a general fuss of him for looking after my sister.
Several years later we were invited to a wedding. The bride was a Land Army friend of my sister鈥檚 and when the bridegroom turned round to greet us, it turned out to be the soldier who had rescued my sister!
