Following the movement of the REME 622 Light Recovery Section to Milan we were stationed in The Lambrate Factory works and overall site, which included a Complete Sports-ground,and swimming pool.It is the home of the Lambretta Motor Scooter, skeleton staff stillin the works were already trying out a "motorised" bicycle,
so soon after the war. Being Regimental Police on the gates of the works I shared the Gatehouse with the Italian Medico who once or twice a week held a Surgery for
families of the laid-off Employees, my office became their waiting room. you rapidly learn a language,in these circumstances.
After 3 months or so we moved to Mestre where we provided a recovery service up to Cortina de Ampezzo.,The Dolomites made quite an impressive background to the work we were doing.Unfortunately two chaps wre involved in an incident at Padua Railway station whenthey finished up with two Tank
Recovery Lorries alongside Platform 1. Whilst a train arrived at platform 3.
This of course resulted in a Court Martial which was to take place at the same time as Field Marshal Kesselring was being tried
for War Crimes in nearby Venice. The FM. was being transported daily from the Lido by Motor-Launch into Venice central where the Court was being held.
At this time I was working as Company Clerk which caused me to contact the Court Martial office by telephone to enquire about the date of the forthcoming Court- Martial of our two drivers and the incident at Padua. By mistake I was put through direct to the Major-General who was presiding over the Kesselring trial.
The resulting consternation as it was realised I was enquiring about minor item
in the courts diary, can only be guessed at. I'm sure their were a few red faces at the office concerned. I wonder if it nearly put a stop to the main event of the year?.
