My father was a padre, serving abroad with the armed forces. My mother, brother Geraint, and I were evacuated from London to live with my aunt in Lampeter.
when I was about five years old we were asked to sing in a concert for the boys of the town who were on leave. I remember my brother singing 'Oh for the wings of a dove'. He had a super boy soprano voice. My contribution was 'My daddy lies over the ocean' and I'm told there were no dry eyes in the house! My most vivid memory of the evening was a young man in uniform being encouraged by the audience to sing. I remember him bounding on to the stage and then singing, 'I'll walk beside you.' Soon afterwards he died in service. That story still moves me deeply, especially when I hear the song.
