I worked in munitions in the war and I remember on the first day war broke out I went to the local fire station in Brighton to fill sandbags with all the young firemen. I was in my late teens and we had a wonderful time.

It was quite frightening when the doodlebugs came over and everywhere I went my gas mask went with me.

There were eight of us in the shelter I used and it was quite crowded as we all had to go up the end. There was one toilet for us all I remember.

I was petrified in the blackout and I clearly remember my mother shining a torch up at the clock on the top of the Duke of York's Cinema to find out the time and the warden shouting "Put that light out."
