John Kirkpatrick tells Joan Armstrong his memories of being a sixteen year old serving in the Auxiliary Fire Service in Carlisle. His job was to report to his depot in South street and take messages on his bicycle to Botcherby and the Maternity Hospital in George Street.
During drill which was held at Rickergate John and his young friends would play the part of casualities. Once he had to jump out of a window into a sheet.
Another time he hide to hide in a drain and call out that he had broken his leg.
