One Sunday morning, I was helping my mother with the dusting. I was dusting the windowsill, while watching out of the window. All of a sudden, an aircraft flew into view. It was German, and low enough for me to see the piolet and stickers on the sides. I shouted through to my mother, but she told me not to be silly, and that the air raid siren would have gone off if it had been German. A couple of minutes later, it returned. My mother saw it and we both wondered why the alarm hadn't been set off. Later on, we discovered that Ryhope Pit had been bombed by the aircraft, which would explain why it was so low.
