My Grandad, Ernie, is the person in question who had a bit of fun with the Home Guard, or rather at their expense.
The local Home Guard Captain was a bit of a Captain Mainwaring type, only much younger, he wasn't able to join up because of his health or something. He was always on at Grandad to join the Home Guard. Now Grandad has never been one for any sort of authority, he knew he'd be called up eventually, but in the early years of the war was working for the Timber Corps/Forestry, so didn't see why he should do any more parading and marching about than necessary.
Eventually this Captain persuaded Grandad that he would lead them into the Forest so that they could familiarise themselves with it and plan their strategy for hiding there in the event of the invasion (think Dad's Army and you can see where this is heading).
So one dark night the local Home Guard were duly led into the woods, at which point Grandad decided he'd had enough & went home for his supper!
I presume they managed to find their way out as I've never seen them in the woods.
