This story is before I was born and was told to me by my mother Beatrice Johnson. My parents lived next door to my grandmother, Jane Johnson, in a fairly isolated cottage surrounded by open fields. In the early hours of one morning during WW2 my mother was woken by my grandmother banging on the door telling her to get dressed quickly and to run for her life as the Gerries had landed and were in their mowing field. In great haste and terrified my mother got dressed and together with Gran they went outside. The plane that my gran had seen coming toward the farm cottages was the night soil cart coming to empty their toilets (they didn't have the luxury of flush toilets at that time) You can imagine what laughter ensued and this story was passed down to all my Grans grandchildren and now their children and grandchildren
