I would like to write about Harry Herd who lived in Leven . He was in the T.A. in 1939 and was called up when war broke out. He served with the BE.F and was sent to France and was in Belgium and return to U.K when the troops left Dunkirk. My gran waited for word from my grandfather, she received a postcard, to say he was safe. He stayed in the army as a cook servicing in Africa, and Germany. After the war went back to work in the pits and open the gunners Club in Leven, with three army friends. My mother Jessie Johnstone (nee Herd) worked in Glasgow for a short time then worked in Nairn in Kirkcaldy making copper bands for 25lb shells. The record for a day was 425 approx; my mother made, on one day, 625 approx then went dancing at night. She said in Methil docks there were ships as far as you could see. And were danced off her feet some nights with the servicemen. My uncle Alex Herd served in the R.A.F. was on his way to the Far East when the war ended. My father worked in the mine called Michael Colliery East Wemyes with his father and brothers, and was in the home guard. This is just a small part of the live in 1939/1945.
