Peter joined up at the age of 18 in 1942. He went to Portsmouth for a Navy trade test for Stoker training and then for motor mechanic on the Isle of Wight. He was later sent to Aberdeen to join a Torpedo Boat. He was engaged with air/sea rescue on other boats. Peter was engaged in target practice in the Firth of Forth for two and a half years.

He also went out to Sydney in Australia and visited New Zealand. He returned on a cruiser after having completed four and half years in the Navy. His rank was a Petty Officer on the Torpedo Boats which patrolled the coasts continuously. Conditions were very cramped on the boat, with 8 crew and 2 officers.
