One night during the war I was walking home from the cinema with my boyfriend. I was about 16 at the time. I looked up to the sky and thought I saw a shooting star but it turned out to be a rocket! It landed near us. I went out with an American and a Canadian soldier who I met at the dances at Wimbledon Town Hall. you'd get to know them and then they'd get sent off somewhere. Mostly they talked about their families back home. One night as I was coming home from the dancehall a piece of shrapnel hit me. I now realise how lucky i was not to be seriously injured. I lived near some docks and we used to watch german bombers coming up the Thames. We used to dread the moon coming ou as we knew they'd be over then. I had an uncle who was captured at Dunkirk and ended up in Colditz.
