This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/大象传媒 Radio Nottingham on behalf of Michael Price with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was about 5 years old playing in Brearly Park with friends. The air raid sirens went off but as usual we ignored it because the 'all-clear' would always go off shortly afterwards. Chesterfield is fairly rural so it was unlikely the Germans were ever going to attack us. However on this occasion my younger cousin, Ted, came tearing down the street screaming...'the Germans are coming!!! They're coming!!!' We began to hear a faint rumbling sound, like thunder, coming from the main road that ran through Whittington. We all ran to the roadside, and for as far as the eye could see, there were great big tanks in convoy, coming down the road. Obviously they werent German tanks, but British ones, probably moving towards a nearby base or something. It was an amazing sight, and the noise was deafening. As the tanks approached, the heads of soldiers appeared out of the tanks waving cans, wanting them filling up with tea. We ran back home to get our mums and ask them to make tea for the soldiers, and then we ran back out to them with their tea. The soldiers were lifting all the kids up onto the tanks and letting them ride on them. It was a day that I will never forget.
