I was 9 years old when war broke out. My Dad was in the army stationed on the Shetland Isles. He was always bringing me Aron jumpers home – they were lovely. My Mum worked at Boots on gas masks – she died in 1978 of asbestos.

At school we never had a lot of schooling and at one point we had it in peoples front rooms. One day we had our lessons in our front room which was lovely – I didn’t have to get up early. We did miss out on a lot of things – we couldn’t go swimming or anything.

One day at Sneinton Dale a German plane came over and gunned everywhere!

On a Saturday morning we had to go down the northern line and queue for coke. We used it for everything, the fire and the cooker at the side of it. My Mum used to make a lovely rice pudding.
