When war started I was at primary school. I was evacuated from Coventry to Leamington spending a month with a family where the father was a store manager. One day he returned from work with a packet of smarties for me...this was the very first time I had ever seen them!
After a month I returned to Coventry and went back to school, although the school day was now much shorter and staff turnover was very high, especially among the male teachers. I was also moved from one school to another- firstly I went to Paradice school, then Edgewick and finally to John Gulson's where classes reached 50-60 pupils as local schools were combined.
