This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jonathan Plant of the CSV 大象传媒 Coventry and Warwickshire Action Desk on behalf of Peter Warden and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

When war started I was at primary school. I was evacuated from Coventry to Leamington spending a month with a family where the father was a store manager. One day he returned from work with a packet of smarties for me...this was the very first time I had ever seen them!
After a month I returned to Coventry and went back to school, although the school day was now much shorter and staff turnover was very high, especially among the male teachers. I was also moved from one school to another- firstly I went to Paradice school, then Edgewick and finally to John Gulson's where classes reached 50-60 pupils as local schools were combined.
