The Icing on the Cake

Cream butter sugar and eggs
add self-raising flour and whisk
while the battle drums beat
and the bullets streak smooth
to a melting mix.
Pour into a hot greased tin.
Bake until the screams still
and the bugle calls.
‘Come to the cook-house door boys
Come to the cook-house door.’
A feast is waiting now, boys.

The icing on the cake.
