I lived in Poole during the war. We had the air raid shelters just outside our front gate so we used to go out there every night. My mum wouldn鈥檛 go in the shelters. She said they were unsafe. She went under the stairs. My father died during the war. He got gassed in the 1st World War. He was only 47. The road opposite they were bombed one night. It all went down like a pack of cards, it was terrifying it was. My brother he went to the soldier鈥檚 campsite under the arches. Inquisitive he found an incendiary bomb. My brother鈥檚 friend said 鈥淐鈥檓on, lets hit it with a hammer.鈥 My brother鈥檚 friend held it to his stomach and got my brother to hit it and it went off and killed him, there and then. My brother had shrapnel all over his body. They never got it all out.
