My Uncle Den used to tell me about when he was a Desert Rat. He used to have to sneak up towards enemy lines to retrieve the tanks that had been shot and disabled. They then had to either fix them or use them for spare parts.

I've a lot of respect for anyone who served in North Africa. From everything I've read, the conditions were simply awful.

Hi Jimi

I really ought to write something properly about my Uncle Den, it'd be terribly difficult though, he died about 20 years ago from emphysema, bought on by smoking. He said he smoked so much because he'd seen things that he really shouldn't have.

He'd tell me very little about the war, mainly because I was a young girl and he just didn't want me to know about horrible things at that age.

I know that most of the people in his platoon died, only a couple of them made it all the way through the war and it affected him very very deeply.

I hope I can find out more about what he did through this site. I'd love to know a bit more about it all. He was my totally favourite uncle!

It's always amazing to read about the sacrifices that generation made and the fact that they rarely talked about it...

That's what makes this site so brilliant!

Hello Peta

I have read your contribution about your uncle Den with interest. I too had an uncle named Sid, who served in the desert. He was a tank transporter, and I have a photo of him in his uniform.

I would very much like to find out the name of the regiment on both the tank mechanics, and tank transporter.

Have you any infomation about this?

Regards
Barbara
