There's too much info to fit in here, so I'll keep it brief. This is the story of my Granparents Andrew and Rosina Gray. My Gran was a teacher from St.Davids, Pembrokeshire West Wales. She was given a post in East London in the late 30's.My Dacu (Welsh for Grandad)was a clark for J Sainsbury and also worked in London. They married in Pembrokeshire in August 1939 then returned to London shortly before my Dacu was called up.My Gran carried on teaching while my Dacu was away but as she was in the Esat End she saw the worst of the blitz and was evacuated with her school to Kilgetty in Pembrokeshire which ironically is a few miles from where her parents' farm was. When my uncle was born she gave up teaching and returned to live in St Davids with her parents and help on the farm.My Dacu was sent to Lahore, then India then at the end of the war was given the horrific task of repatriazing the British POWs that had been captured and imprisoned in Burma and Japan. Both my Grandparents were skilled and honset letter writer's and wrote to each other nearly every day thus giving a moving and revealing account of the war from the perspectives of two young lovers who became married parent's (one awating the return of her huband soldier), Londoners, farmers, soldier's, POWs etc. My Gran's brother was in the Merchant Navy and there are boxes of his letters to my Great Granparents and rest of the family. The letters give so much detail of the things that affected those that stayed at home (my Gran's) aswell the things that affected those who had to fight (my Dacu's).There are also some letter's to my Gran from the people that my Dacu helped in Japan and some letters that are written in Urdu to my Gran, I don't know what thay say , but there is a photo acompaning them showing what looks like a football team of Pakistani's with my Dau's little white face peeping out from the middle holding a whistle.I think the army boys had a game of footie with the locals...Anyway, if you think the letters and photos might be of interest please feel free to get in touch, all the best, Caroline Gray *-*
