I remember the first and only time i was a bridsmaid the excitement I felt. My mother got the dresses for my cousin and myself from a shop in Chapel St. Islington. They were a beautiful blue, with funny little round hats like gramophone records. We traveled down to Cambridge from Kings's Cross Station. The wedding was to take place the next day, my mother's cousin was getting married to a coalman. Everyone who could get there was there some on leave from all the services. I remember when we got back to the reception seeing this beautiful white cake, and I couldn't wait for the time when the bridal couple would cut it, and we would all have a slice, but what a disappointment, because it was a fake when the beautiful white cardboard icing was removed, there was just a small fruit cake at the bottom. Which didn't have a lot of fruit in because of the rations, in fact it was the first cake I ate that had grated carrot init.
