The country was preparing for D-day for a couple of years as drastic changes had to be made after Dunkirk.
Many thousands of soilders were stationed in the south of the country in preparation for the D-Day landings.
I remember being stuck in the corner of a vegatable field during this time, along with a Sargeant, Corporal and ordinary soilders like me.
All we had to eat was bully beef and biscuits but we were ordered to stay put in the field. About a mile away there was a General Officers HQ and past this a small village. I suggested to the soilders with me that they start to pick vegatables from the field - carrots, parsnips,
potatoes etc. Meanwhile I got my full kit on, polished my shoes, rifle on my sholder trying to look very smart.
I then marched through the HQ - trying to look very important. It worked, I wasn't approached once - not even by the military police. Once past the HQ I managed to buy bread from the village shop and marched back to where my friends were in the vegetable fields.
I then went on to make lovely lobby with corned beef, potatoes, carrots, suede and with the delicious bread from the village bakery.
I was certainly the "Lad of the squad" that day !
