We were always being involved in something positive. In ‘Warships Week’ I won a prize for a design of a poster and I won 10 shillings which was serious money and I put it towards a bike.

We bought a Spitfire named ‘Hadleigh’ but unfortunately it only flew a few sorties before it was shot down.

I can remember a clothier’s shop called ‘Dibbles’ in the High Street which displayed a coffin. Customers were encouraged to pay a penny and ‘Knock a nail in Hitler’s Coffin’.
