Harold Lindsay - now departed - had come home on leave from the army. At that time there was no public transport after 10 o'clock at night and he had arrived in the middle of the night. His only option to get home was to walk so he set off to do just that.
That night saw a particularly heavy incendiary attack across Leeds that took in just his route home. He had to walk along Whitehall Road/Geldard Road dodging the incendiary devices as they fell, he jumped in and out of doorways to avoid them.
He finally got home to Farnley Forge and just as he got ot his house a device fell on the greenhouse attached to one of the houses and destroyed it.
Frieda his widow told this story and said he remembered this event very clearly throughout his life.
