During the war, I lived in Darwen. My father's sister (Aunty Nelly) lived in Sale, near Manchester and if there was an air-raid on over Manchester during the night, my father and I would stand in our back yard and listen to the bombs and watch the glow in the distance. Very emotional!

I was only five years old in 1942.

The shortages encouraged us to be very frugal with everything on the home front. We were asked to save fuel in every form and I remember falling asleep in bed with a bedside candle burning. My parents never lost their hatred of waste. My father would say: "Brian, do you need all these lights on?"
