I was born in 1934 in Broomhill, Glasgow. I remember sitting round the radio hearing the announcement that we were at war. I was evacualted when I was six years old along with my sister. I remember the label round my neck and I also remember being fitted for a gas mask at the house of a Mr Pickard. I was disappointed not to get a Mickey Mouse one. My father took a cine film at the station and I have had it transferred to a VHS tape.

I remember going to the station and me and my sister were billoted in a school house with the school mistress who had a dog. I remember Jenny Lambert, the housekeeper, as she was very nice to us and we used to play kick the can with her. The outside toilet had a big wooden seat. We were there for about a year and sometimes our parents visited us.

The next place we were evacuated to was in West Kilbride. It was a very big house and the man was in the navy. Etiquette was strict and all I remember is that I didn鈥檛 like it there.

During the war my father was in the ARP. I remember an American cousin who was in the American Air Force visited us once. My father used to run concerts for the children in the neighbourhood for the Red Cross. We stayed near the railway in Glasgow which were a target and I used to hear the whistling bombs.

On VE day I was in Glasgow and I remember my Dad putting up flags in the street.
