This is Thomas Harri's story told by Tom Fene his grandson.

My grandfather was an electrical engineer which was a reserve occupation. He lived in Swansea which was of course heavily bombed during the second world war. The regularly used to watch Swansea being bombed.

He was 18 when the war broke out and he was called up in 1943 to be an electrical engineer. He luckily passed an exam so instead of being in the D Day landings he loaded shells and boats making it a very lucky escape.

After D Day he worked on a ship called the HMS Anson. I think he was a petty officer. The boat went through the Suez Canal to Sri Lanka and spent some time in Australia.

On the way back they went to Hong Kong after the bombs had been dropped. Then they went onto Tokyo and then they went home.

He wanted to go to University after the war but decided to take the quick demob route so it meant he couldn't go to university.

After the war he went back to being a civil engineer and he worked for the Post Office and British Telecom.
