On the morning of 1st Oct 1940, I did what I always did and that was to go and knock on my friends door to go to school, we had had a terrible night with the bombing, my mother and my sister who was 2yrs older than me, we were under the table that was put under the stairs, with the settee in front of it, anyway as I walked up the road, there was an awful lot of activity in my friends road, and I could see some of the houses had been bombed, as I approached their house it just wasn't there anymore and I asked a man standing there, "is Shirley and Clifford coming to school today" and I can remember him saying "no luv, not today", I was the same age as Clifford 7yrs old and Shirley was 9yrs old, and it was a very long time after that I found out, that they had all been in the shelter, Their Mum, Dad, Nan, and baby Brenda 4months old, they had a direct hit on the shelter, it was a parachute mine.
I will never forget that scene, and I will never forget them.
