I lived at Lyth on the Howe during the war years. There was an Army Camp about a couple of miles away. They had a searchlight for tracking planes and, one night, ( I can't remember the date or the year as I was quite young at the time) there was a spate of raids on Barrow. The searchlight beamed onto a German bomber. To make a speady getaway they dropped their load of bombs one after the other landing on the mosses at Cinderbarrow, Levens. Fortunately, they did no damage due to the soft ground. I remember being very frightened at the time, hearing the loud bangs and not knowing what was happening. My sister, who was eight years older than me, went and collected a large V shaped peice of shrapnell, all jagged and sharp.
