I was 11 years old when war broke out. I lived close to Ringway airport (now Manchester International)which was a training airport for the Paratroop Regiment. Their attitude to life was enjoy it today because there might not be a tormorrow. I remember my father warning me that I had not to go any where near the camp, because the young men were sometimes bad boys. This did not mean much to an eleven year old.
My father was in the RAF reserves and he did his service at Ringway in the Gas Room. this is where they tested the gas masks. I remember him testing our gas mask in our bathroom.
I was not evacuated and remember coming home from school one day and having to get off the bus on Princess Parkway because the siren had gone. I went into the air raid shelter by myself. Imagine that happening today.
