I joined the army at 17 and a half and was posted to the Royal Signals, training at Huddersfield (at an old clothing mill that was converted) as a wireless operator. Then I was posted to Whaddon to operater Windy Ridge. Information obtained at Bletchley Park code breaking carried on teleprinter to us, and then we transmitted it by Morse code to Commanders in the field. We didn鈥檛 know who it was going to, it was all in code. We each had a frequency to use and commanders tuned in. We were tuned in and communication with Royal Signals all the time. We were mainly sending with occasional receiving.
I remember we had to walk through the churchyard to get to the station for work. One evening a colleague appeared at the transmitting station white faced and without his cap. It turned out a low branch had knocked his cap off but this was not what we thought had happened!
I met my wife at the site she was an evacuee.
