We had signal lamps, and one chap lost his and he had to report it. We had to write a report about it and this is what I wrote, my statement:
Sergeant Jones states ‘I am able to corroborate fusilier Drummond’s statement as his Sergeant. The enemy post was, as stated, was about 25 yards across the railway. When our aircraft started to machine gun the railway embankment I withdrew the full section as the machinegun fire was extremely close and intense. When fire ceased I moved forward to our forward position, when fusilier Drummond failed to find the signal lamp, and reported to Lieutenant Tucker.’
Nobody did anything about it though. We had a signal officer at headquarters, a new chap, and he was a bit officious, nobody else bothered about that, but he had to do it because he’d reported it. So it had to be done.
