I joined the Army in January 1940. The Blitz in London was my first assignment and probably the worst, we weren鈥檛 allowed in shelters and instead we had to rescue people, dead and alive, from damaged areas. The worst part of the war was the death of innocent women and children. The air raids would go on from 6pm to 4am sometimes.
I was in London till October 1940, until our next assignment, which was in Northern Africa. We arrived there in November 1940 and stayed until November 1943. During that period I was wounded once in the stomach. My friend got sunk in his ship, which was attacked, on the way to Northern Africa.
We left there in November 1943 and arrived back home in December. I received 14 days leave, and then was sent to Scotland for training for D-Day. Once it was completed we were taken to Aver heath camp, guided by Canadians, so we couldn鈥檛 tell anyone what we were doing.
On June 6th 1944, we went across with the Americans in land crafts. We were the second batch to go in. We went right through Aramanches, Bayou (both in France), Khan in Belgium to Unlatch in Germany, 1944-45. In 1946 I was demobbed.
Sometime during the war, we had a Church Parade, and afterwards there was a speech made by Mr Churchill. Mr Churchill had promised us good leaves, etc which we didn鈥檛 receive, so he had quite an unpleasant welcome.
