From 1940 until the end of the war I was a Prisoner of War in Germany.
I am Polish.
It was very hard early on but after 1942 when the Germans knew they were losing they eased up on us.
There were 300,000 people there.
If you worked you were alright.
I lived from day to day and never thought I would get home.
I knew that someone was thinking about me and always praying for me.
I was in the centre of Hamburg when it was bombed.
I was fortunate — I was not treated too badly.
All nationalities were there — Italians, Serbians, Yugoslavians, Romanians, Belgiums.
