My memory of the day war ended was the day my friends and I did what would have been classed as very daring in those days!
We were stationed at Nottingham at that time and it was really exciting to be in the city that night. We were so happy and we joined in with all the other members of the Forces from all over the world and danced throughout the streets doing the Conga and the Hokey Cokey.
When we got back to our billets at Daybrook where we were living in requisitioned shops we looked at the lovely Church opposite us and began to wonder if there was anyone who did not know that the war was over!(During the war church bells were not allowed to be rung as that meant that the country was being invaded)
In those days churches were never locked so we were very brave and went in and rang the bells!!
I must admit that we made a hasty retreat and no one came after us, but the next day there was an item in the local paper which said"Who rang the bells in Daybrook Church?" I am afraid we didn't own up!
