In 1942 I was a border taking my Final Government Matriculation in a school in Maymyo near Mandalay, north Burma, in the hills. My parents lived in Rangoon. My father was the superintendent of the Rangoon Police Force, although he was born in Queenborough, and my mother was a Burmese lady. they married in Rangoon Cathedral. On March 27th 1942, the headmistress assembled all the pupils together and told us of the imminent war with Japan. We had to pack our bags and prepare to go to our families in the South. The school closed and the War Authority took it over.
