It was a little after midnight on the 19th November 1942, a convoy was making slow progress through the English Channel and were close to the Eddystone Lighthouse when they came under attack by a pack of fast
speeding 'E' boats armed with torpedoes which resulted in the following cargo ships bound for South Wales being torpedoed and sunk:
BIRGITTE - 1595 tons (MOWT) and
YEW FOREST - 815 tons (J.Stewart @ Co.)
also the Royal Naval Patrol Service Trawler HMS Ullswater. The following is a Crew List of HMS Ullswater.

It is believed all the crew perished with their ship and their names are commemorated on the Royal Naval Patrol Service War Memorial at Sparrow's Nest, Lowestoft, Suffolk.
