Later the Americans joined the war and were stationed around Eastleigh. Entertainment had to be provided for the troops and my father used to run dances for them at weekends in the Town Hall ballroom, which has now been changed into ‘The Point’.
The ballroom used to hold 300 people and only 300 people, so often there were arguments if the hall was full. Military police always were present, one British Army, one Naval officer, one air force and four American police (two black, two white). They used to stay out of sight in the kitchen until they were needed; I used to stay in the kitchen, helping with the washing up after the refreshments.
