"I was in the war from the beginning to the end, in the army frequently on century duties, as a spotter, using searchlights.
I had lots of friends in the war but one particularly good friend. I was 20 years old when I was stationed at a camp in Taunton, Somerset. I heard that my good friend had been walking along the street and a tank went past. The wind that the tank caused pulled my friend towards it and the tank broke his neck, and he was killed. "
