These were my orders one day whilst escorting prisoners to the Nuremberg trials.
1. You are responsible for the safe delivery of Karl Buck to the Court House, War Crimes, Wuppertal.
2. Karl Buck has been sentenced to death for the murder of Allied personnel. You will therefore take every precaution to ensure that he does not escape.
3. He will be collected from the Werl Jail.
4. On reporting to the Comdt Werl Jail you will give the password 鈥淢aj McEwen-Williams鈥, Buck will then be handed over to your custody.
5. On arrival at Wuppertal you will report to the President of the War Crimes Court.
6. (a) You will stay with Buck until the President gives permission for him to be returned to Werl.
(b) On return to Werl you will hand Buck over to Comt Werl Jail.
7. Your escort will consist of 3 MPs and one prison warder.
8. The following precautions will be taken:-
(a) Buck will be securely handcuffed.
(b) He will be thoroughly searched before taking him over.
(c) Civilians will not be allowed to him or approach him.
(d) BUCK WILL NOT ESCAPE
I was quite apprehensive to collect this gentleman, expecting him to try and escape at every opportunity. Imagine my surprise when they bought the prisoner out鈥arl Buck was an aging man with one leg!
