My Grandfather Sydney Steadman served in Burma for about 3 years. He served in the RA/308 batt. Anti aircraft.Unfortunatly he never talks much about his service in Burma.I think he just keeps it to himself. Some things he has told me, only snipets though. He said in Assam and Sierra Leone nothing much happened, but i know different.Having looked up on the subject,it was quite nasty there. He told me that he was an N.C.O and that he caught Maleria, which made him give up smoking. The funniest story he said wasn't in Burma, But the Kent coast. He was on guard duty at night with his Lee Enfield. It was on top of a hill near the officers quaters. Cause it was so dark he lost his footing and rolled down the hill.He put his bayonet through the officers door, this scared the plop out of the officer. He said"Steadman is that you". Always made me laugh, also he said about the sargent who kept stealing the lemonade. To get him back someone peed in a bottle and he never did it again. My Grandad was always a wheeler and dealer. When he was on leave from Burma a mate wanted to sell a watch. So Grandad asked him how much he wanted for it?He went on to raffle it for him.Gave his mate what he wanted and kept the rest.A friend of his was also an officers Batman, who was on the boat at the time. He invited Grandad into the officers room. They then got through the gin but replaced it with water.I wonder if they noticed, i bet they did!
