During the war we got word from I don't know where, that a train load of bananas had been dumped at a local railway sidings.
My Father, his friend Bill and myself drove there in our bread van. My dad and Bill climbed into these large waggons and I stayed on the ground whilst they gave me these 'hands' of bananas.
Although the bananas were quite green, they were not green enough to be sold to the retailers. We were told that the ship bringing them to this country had taken so long to get to England that they just dumped them in the sidings.
We took them home and every time Dad went out delivering bread, he took bunches of bananas to give to his customers, especially those with children.
