In early 1944 a body was found in the local mill lodge and being an inquisitve 3 year old I
nudged through the crowd to view this body. He was black and bloated having been in the water for some time. Most comments from the grown-ups were that that was the usual effect and to make sure that the 'Bogey Man' didn't come out of the water to get me. During the summer one of the neighbours took to entertaining our 'gallant American forces', namely soldiers from their camp at Burtonwood. On this particular Saturday morning I scampered out of the house at a great pace to the gate only to find my way blocked by two of the largest coulored gentlemen imaginable who bent down to pick me up. I thought that the 'Bogey Men' had indeed come to get me and I screamed the place down. It took weeks for me to stop the nightmares and even now almost 60 years on I still get the shudders thinking of it.
