I was aged 9 years old when war broke out on 3rd September 1939. My earlist recollection of minor wartime events as I was involved in was watching troops which I believed formed the British Expeditionary force. (BEF) travelling through Kingswood in army vehicles of various types on their way to Avonmouth.
We were throwing apples to the troops as they passed, which the owner of the local apple orchard had allowed us to do.
Later on with the other small boys, I was involved in collecting all forms of metal which included tins and also glass which had to be taken to a local site for recycling. "Saucepans for Tanks" and railings that had been pulled out were also used. The War meant that by 1941, we needed these resources for the war effort, and this was my contribution as a young boy towards it.
