I was in the land army and I was at Columbine Hall where I did my training. I was in with cows and it was hand milking in those days. We had to learn all about the cows and calving. The only thing I didn鈥檛 like was when I had to take the bull for a walk and the halter, I was petrified of him. I lived in a hostel at Stoke by Nayland with a friend of mine. There were girls from all over. I got nits and the lady who was over us put paraffin on my head and my bedlinen in disinfectant, so with that I walked out and got a lift on a lorry to Ipswich to my mum鈥檚. I wouldn鈥檛 go back there so they put me to North cove near Beccles where I lived with farmer and his wife. I had all the milking and feeding the cows. I took the tumble out and I didn鈥檛 know anything about horses and first time I took the tumble out the horses head was at the back of the tumble! But I got used to Penny, she was quiet horse. The farm was called North Cove and Captain Blower owned the farm. I had some happy times, I met my husband there, he was working on the farm and we soon got married. My mother used to do all my washing, I sent it home to Ipswich every week. I was near Ellough aerodrome and you鈥檇 see planes hedge hopping home. On D-Day we heard them all going out but didn鈥檛 know why.
