Dictated by Mrs Easter - my most vivid memory is of mum dressing me in a mac and a pair of wellington boots, which were easier for me to carry. We went by train which, was really hot. On reflection I think mum sent me away because we were so poor.

We went to a school and sat on benches. I was tired, hungry and very sad. It felt like a market place wher people came and picked who they wanted.

Five of us were picked by a husband and wife in their thirtys. They then took us to their house.

We went to school and had special teachers from our home, South Shields.

We were expected to do general household duties. I did washing up and odd jobs and was given some pocket money.

I was shy and had an inferiorty complex. I felt others were better than me.

I stayed there for two years.

After this I was moved to Windermere and attended a hugh school. I was scared stiff.

I worked in a big private house while I was at the school. I used to work in a kitchen with my sister. I ate in the kitchen with other staff.

I was put in an attic room. It scared me when I climebed the stairs.

I was moved as it was a private school and we went to work in another house.

I got into a real state and asked to go home to my mother. However the bombing was so bad in in South Shields that I had to be evacuated again with a younger sister. We were sent back to Kirkby by Stevens to another house.

I stayed there till I was thirteen or fourteen.

I always felt there was something nissing in my life and felt inferior. I have always vowed to work hard and save.
