I was 17 years old when war was declared and if you were unmarried and had no children, you either went into the forces or munitions work.

I went to work at the RAF at Stopes Brow, Lower Darwen - I was working on Bay 4 "Triggers".

I met my future husband who was in the Royal Welsh Fusilliers stationed in Witton Park. We got married as I was 19 and we both lived with my parents on Franklin Street.

My husband Thomas was de-mobbed in March 1946 and we set up home in Witton
