Mum often told us of the night she was on Air Raid Patrol duty in Perth when they saw a lot of aircraft heading over to the west of Scotland. She said they knew they were German aircraft because of the particular throbbing noise of their engines.I think she said they were able to see some kind of light or flame coming from the engine exhausts. They knew from the numbers involved that somewhere was going to be hit hard.It was believed likely that the aircraft had flown from bases in Norway to reach Scotland.
That was the night of the Clydebank blitz, when so many were killed. Some time later they heard similar numbers flying back to Norway, only this time the engine noises were different, and they were flying faster, having dropped their bomb loads and done their lethal work.
