MY name is Nora I am 74 trs old. I was born in Kingston-upon-Hull but now live in Newark-on-Trent Nottinghamshire.I was living in Hull when world war two began. I was aged 8. I can remember night after night in the air raid shelter listenint to the bombs falling and the machine gun fire . I hate the sound of thunder. We were bombed out twice. Sometimes when we had to do lessons in the school air raid shelter too. We had to carry a gas mask in a cardboard box slung over our shoulder. When I was ten it was decided that I was to be evacuated to a safer place. I went to a place called Etton Camp which was near Beverly. There were a lot of children at this camp both boys and girls. I lived there for nigh on 4 yrs. I had 4 brothers but they are all dead now. They were evacuated to a place called Haggworthingham in Lincolnshire. I was not to see any of my brothers or my mother for six years after I was evacuated. Thus the end of family life for me. I returned to hull In 1945 where I lived with my father. My mother had left the family home during the war and she never returned. I met up with my mother after my father died but I only saw one brother. Thus the war for me was a double tragedy. It split my family up. I quite enjoyed my stay at Etton camp. I hated though when my father had to leave me.after visits. I now have a family of my own and my one ambition has to kepp the family together so far I have manged it even thogh they live in different parts of the country. The telephone and computers particularly web-cams help to maintain continuity in the family. Whenever there is a family celebration we all mange to attend. I love the family get togethers. In fact I just love being part of a family once again having lost contact with my first family. I am the sole survivor from my first family. My parents and brothers all having died before me.I have been in touch with some of the people who were evacuated at the same camp as me all those years ago but have never attended a re-union.probably because I was not aware of any re-unions happening. That is my war story in brief.
