During the war my father, as a farmer, was a special constable. One of the things he had to do was to go on point duty to see if there were lights showing through the blackout curtain. And to see if there were any air craft which had been shot down. Once he had to go up and guard one which had been, he had to guard it becasue of the ammunition on borad.
One night he was on point duty, as he came home - there was a huge explosion - which he always said nearly blew him in the back door. It was a land mine, which had been dropped from a plane. It landed just where he'd been standing moments before.
I also remember on the road close to the Warren House Inn - in the middle of Dartmoor - the road was used for some aeroplanes; Lysanders, to take off and land. They were noted for needing a very short runway to take off. One aeroplane also shed its load of bombs in the parish - trying to get away.
